As a family run business set within a beautiful natural environment, we care about our surroundings and what we will pass onto our children. With this in mind we aim to make our business as environmentally friendly as possible.
Reduce/Reuse/Recycling
- Kitchen and Garden waste to composting unit
- Household items, printer cartridges – Red Cross Charity Shop, Huntly
- Aberdeenshire Council local recycling centre at Gartly Hall – plastics, bottles etc
- Cut down on energy and water usage
- Use low energy light bulbs in most of house.
In the Dining Room
- Use less individually packaged items
- Use refillable containers.
- Use locally made produce purchased from Local Farmers Market
- Use local produce; shop in niche local shops whenever possible
Sustainable Tourism
Change of land use away from agriculture and towards recreation, Coynachie is now the centre of a beautiful native wood with streams, wild flower meadow and walking routes. This woodland project commenced in 2002 and has been sponsored and funded in partnership by British Petroleum (BP), the Forestry Commission Scotland and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
Biodiversity
The project objective was to re-create a landscape that used to exist in the area centuries ago, by planting native tree species and rebuilding biodiversity. Awards!
- Runner-up in the New Native Woodland category of the national Go Native! Planting for Biodiversity Awards run by Flora Locale and the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM)
- Guinness World Record 2006 – for largest number of trees planted in an hour.
Coynachie Guest House Initiative
We also have tried to increase the natural biodiversity of the area by
- Removing a dense plantation of non native pine trees to allow natural light onto an older plantation of native trees.
- Encourage the regeneration of dormant seeds, wild primroses and other native flowers
- Created a pond to encourage frogs and other wild life.
- Shortly we will plant an orchard with apple, plum and cherry tree (Bird Cherry and Gaen)
Our aim is for everyone to enjoy the beautiful countryside but to make as little impact on it as possible. We try to make Coynachie Guest House as environmentally friendly as possible and to increase the natural biodiversity of the local area.
